Default BMW Oil Service - +0.9L and dirt/dust build up

Just a quick one to say that after having had an oil service undertaken by BMW they were a little perturbed to find the electronic measure showing +0.9L. They double checked by means of the dipstick which shows full as per the service and I think they wanted to replace the electronic oil sensor. I told them it would be fine as is and am sure it will settle a bit more after a longer journey (they did go through the reset procedure and take her for a quick run but to no avail).

At the end of the day it is 0.1 out and assume this is acceptable - it is electronic after all. Has anyone else found this? I did read the oil service sticky which seems to lean towards what was found here (pages 2/3)

Also once they removed the airbox they said they found lots of dirt and dust which they thought may enter the throttle bodies if not removed. They quoted 2 hours labour but I said I would sort it myself. Is this build up of dust and dirt here normal? Should I have got BMW to sort it? I assume it is a fairly straight forward task to complete the cleaning.

Any comments appreciated.

Mine says +0.9 mate.Anywhere from +0.1 to +1.1 is ok,but always keep mine between +0.4 and +0.9. I dont know what your dealer is was so unhappy about as most show+0.9 after a service.

That's fine mate, as BOUNCE says they tend to sit around that after a BMW oil change. As long as it's not at +1.1 then all is well!

Lol - cheeky fookers - 2 hours labour?

Dead easy to DIY clean airbox mate: disconnect 3 x connectors, remove strut brace, remove torx screws on airbox, pull airbox towards you and up to remove. There are a few threads on here with info.

Check to make sure that you have the new style airfilter (with an extra band of foam around 1/2 of bottom edge of the filter element) - the old style filter was recalled due to the issue you described, the newer style was a whole lot better but not perfect. Regular cleaning is the key to keeping it tidy.

Also if the oil was overfilled it'd still only ever show 1.1 on the dash. ALWAYS use the dipstick to measure oil, nothing else is more accurate.

After my Insp 2 mine now shows +0.4L which I'm told is ok, I am really tempted to top it up but dont know if I should!?

Also I assume BMW would have cleaned out my sandpit as part of the service for an Insp 2 would they?

mine went to +0.4 after getting home from Silverstone, I thought it was too low (always keep it close to 1 with top ups ) so carried out an oil and filter change yesterday. I took it for a small run and it still shows +0.4. I know it takes a bit to sort its self out but is there a reset ?

Press and hold the sport button I believe does the reset but it may take a while to get a new reading ie "This can take half an hour or more". Best thing is to reset and go for a 30 minute drive and then give the indicator stalk a push to see what comes up or stop the car once up to 'operating temp' and wait 2 minutes having parked on a level surface.

Thanks Brett, mine was always +1.0L before hand and I'd like it a bit higher, for some unknown OCD reason!

I thought pushing and holding the Sport button just forces it to give an instant reading and won't reset anything? The only way for it to get a consistent reading is to take it on a nice long drive!
