Indeed. Problem is it's not an "M" engine, just a mildly tuned 335i motor. My 335i was lovely but engine was bland and pretty boring once you got over the usual turbo torque thing. Within 6 months I had it mapped and that kept my interest for a few months. Then got bored again!

of course its an m engine. its a new m engine, and its called progress.
its an entry level M, fast, economical, practical etc etc. its no CSL, but its certainly an evolution of the brand. given the cost of petrol, i think its a bold move. i know its only a rendering, and i know you've seen it before, but if they built it, and called it a CSL, What would your thoughts be then? its an awesome bit of kit at the end of the day. shame a tuner and a graphic designer got to it first... http://www.worldcarfans.com/11101173...series-m-coupe |

I know why M are turning to turbos but it doesn't mean I have to think it is a great idea, the throttle response on a turbo engine just isn't there like it is on the great NA M engines. Don't get me wrong turbo engines are OK in appliances, we have 2 petrol turbos in our house at the moment (335i and ed30) but for me M engines are about throttle response, high rpms and great noise and I've not yet driven a turbo engine that gets close. I suspect in the future that the s65 will be seen as the peak of M engines.

As you say, we all know why they are doing it but that doesn't mean we have to like it. |

http://www.pistonheads.com/news/defa...?storyId=22895 Hopefully of most interest to potential recruits to the M brand will be the 340hp straight six with twin turbochargers that gives the 1M a power-to-weight ratio of 227hp/tonne. The engine has been lifted, apparently pretty much unmodified, straight out of the Z4 - which if true would make the giant 'Powered by BMW M' label under the bonnet seem a little (cough!) fraudulent. ![]()
