I did this but my car felt ruined afterwards I imagine wet days are less harsh but also less sociable

Silverstone / Bedford would be a good start.

Splitter... Admittedly that wasn't the best start but that was only cosmetic. When I got home my car sat in the bath and ran the shower uttering "I feel so dirty"

Agree, avoid airfields, boring and paint/tyre damage is massive. I'm also Somerset based, Combe is great and easy to get to but Brands Hatch/Goodwood/Silverstone are not too far. The two best first timer tracks are Bedford and Anglesea, both a jaunt I know, but make it an overnighter with a pal or something? If it helps, I'm at Bedford on 16th November with Circuit Days, I am more than happy to help you out/advise etc, and you get some free tuition with Circuit Days too

would be good to get a trackday done before the Christmas vacation.
And it seems like Bedford is a pretty good place to start out.

I'd recommend car limits.

it might knacker your tyres a bit, but its good fun and you'll learn lots.

the sprint circuit at the end of the day is really good.
