The module under my steering column looks like this...
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/251394886442 Together with this, I should have another module behind the glovebox yes? From what I understand, I'm going to have buy a new one from BMW to be coded with the key/ECU etc. Really hope that's us now... Mileage correction and replace a couple of lamps on the instrument cluster next |

Nope! The system you have there is EWS111D. Not what I was expecting, actually...
It's all in one with that system, so no additional unit behind the glovebox. This is the highest sophistication of anti-drive away protection of its type, and you will probably need a dealer machine and knowledgable operator to reset the DME rolling code table to #1. So, should I unplug the module behind the glovebox?
The module under the steering rack is brand new from BMW by the chassis number and has been coded correctly. Would the other module behind the glovebox confuse the system if I've it plugged in? It's slowly becoming clearer now. Thanks again, Baz |

The EWS module should need no coding. The proceedure you need is to reset the DME's rolling code table back to the start. Both the EWS and the DME will have a rolling code algorithm, which obviously match each other every step. The new EWS will start from step 1, and the DME will need to be instructed to go back to step 1 and from there the two will match. I don't know what will happen if the EWS has now started and moved on. You will need someone with more experience than me if that is the case. I do have a mate who is ex-BMW master tech, now running his own independent specialist garage. PM me if you want me to put you in touch. He is a lovely guy and will probably advise you if needed.

The guy that has the car now is ex BMW tech and appears to have all the tools and equipment. The last time I spoke, the car was cranking over, even think he said it was running for a few seconds before packing in. I've mailed him, just hope he checks his mail regularly.
Hopefully he will get another look at it tomorrow and get in touch. I was reading that file again about the immobiliser stuff and seen the thing about the rolling codes. I have to keep reminding myself it's going a lot better than I thought it ever would. So close now, I'm just glad it's cranking over showing the starter is still good. Thanks again, will keep you posted. |

Spoke to one of the guys at the garage since he wasn't in when I called.
No further forward really, car is still cranking to the point where it sounds like it's going to start but doesn't actually start. The lad told me he's ordered a camshaft/crankshaft sensor... Not sure which one (if indeed there is both) the line was very poor and your man was difficult to make out. He did say that it was showing no error codes though, which he found strange. I didn't get round to asking about the clocks or the LCM module, I'll maybe call back this afternoon see if I can speak to the main man. Thing about he EWSIII though, the car I took the modules from had both the module under the steering column and the black module behind the glovebox. He appears to have got round the immobilisor issue though... Maybe |

Spoke to the main man there a while ago, he told me the car tries to start for a very long time and eventually will fire up for 2-3 seconds before dying again. It'll do this over and over again.
He's very confident we're around the immobilisor issue and is going to try and code the LCM later today. He insists the clocks can't be coded but he can correct the mileage The new sensor will be in before the weekend hopefully and I've to call him next week again, no bother. Once we do get it running and all serviced up, I may get the clocks coded if need be but all the needles are working as tested including the rev counter which moves when the car is starting and running albeit for 2-3 seconds. Thoughts? |

SHE'S RUNNING!!!
He got her running over the weekend there and it appears to have been the clocks stopping it from running. He tells me he hasn't coded the clocks, somehow got the immobiliser and all lined up without the clocks, installed the clocks again and it's starting everytime, on the button. My only worry is that tamper dot now. I've asked him to have the mileage corrected and let me know about the tamper dot. He still insists used clocks cannot be recoded and new ones are £700 but I feel I may be contacting John Leacock for further advice. Well chuffed is an understatement, he says she's running like a dream. Hard to believe it's sat for 13 years, without electrical power never mind run. Happy days. |
