If you choose to travel the Hull Amsterdam route, it's an overnight (10hr.45min) crossing, departing Hull at 8-30pm. and arriving in Amsterdam at approx. 8.15am. the following morning.
The cost is approx. £238 based on; car, driver and passenger, this includes a 2 person cabin. http://www.poferriesoffers.co.uk/

The DFDS ferry from Newcastle to Amsterdam is again overnight, considerably cheaper (on a quick look) but adds approx 4hrs to the crossing time departing at 5.30pm. and arriving at 9.30am. (Late start for the journey to Munich) http://www.dfdsseaways.co.uk/ferry-r...-to-amsterdam/

Either route leaves an 8hr. drive on the other side to Munich (so a fair bit of sight seeing involved, albeit fleeting)

Conclusion:Arrive Munich 6/7.00/9.00pm. Totally knackered.
P&O go from Hull - Rotterdam too, which is a bit further south than Amsterdam. Not a huge amount in it, but possibly knocks off about 30mins on the journey

I think it will be swings and roundabouts, I did have a quick look at that as an alternative, but being further south will involve a longer crossing time and in consequence a later start 9.30/10.30, but a little less driving time as you said.
However that might put us in Munich much later than anticipated via the Amsterdam Route.

Whatever route is decided there's one thing for sure - we'll have to hit the ground running to make Munich before bedtime

You're correct my mistake, I got my 'Dams' mixed up, misinterpreted the information on destinations (P&O page 2).
Consolation prize attached, graphic of destination for costs info. (original is over sized so attaching has shrunk it)

No probs

I wouldn't normally choose Rotterdam over Amsterdam, but in this case I will
