Default Cylinder head close up

Getting into this taking picture thing ,.... close up of csl head polished inlets , look good on csl head, not sure if std m3 has this? Exhaust outlet doesn't get the same treatment, Potential problem I've noticed sticking chain tensioner piston. This one is not smooth in operation anybody ever had to replace on ??

My mechanic advised me on replacing it while he did treated my VANOS with Beisan stuff. I can ask him what is his take on it? But from what i remember this part is only around 80 pounds.. so not that expensive.


The picture of the inlet valves is worrying, it looks like metal flakes?

Hi select , not flakes just dust. Head has been lying around to long collecting dust I definitely think these tensioners could be future problem sticking, giving rise to loose chain issues.

Seeing as how you are doing extensive work to the engine anyway, i would just go ahead and replace it. If you need it i can see if i can provide you with the partnumber. Let me know.

I think Chad was referring to what looks like porting work on the inlet side of the head. I read something a long time ago that CSL heads were given some hand finishing (A bit like Honda Type-R engines back in the day). I don't know how true it is though and I've never seen a normal M3 head side by side with a CSL head. Would be interested to know.

Hi Julian, this is a bit of fun for me, more research and practice run than anything else, for when I do my motor, this is a spare engine we have from my lads car, he bought new motor from BMW , as this one previously spun a shell , but it all looks not to bad considering it did 100k , will be doing a few practice rebuilds with this one

You are correct, i did not read correctly.

Yes CSL had ported/polished inlet side to match the better designed inlet valves. Exhaust side is as far as i am concered the same as normal m3.

I am very jealous of your project and i have much respect for you rebuilding the engine

To be honest i am not very surprised that it spun a bearing shell. They should be replaced every 60k miles, if its been driven like its meant to be, in my opinion.

The inlet valves are the same as regular m3, it's the exhaust valves that are different. Port work is the same as regular S54 too.

My version of a water leak down test while striped, only no 5 hardly leaked number 4 was the worst, pics taken after a 3 minutes. Will lightly lap all the valves in and re try them again
