Ok, latest is:-

The genius with the computer has the car cranking over but won't start. Throwing up a chassis number mismatch error code.

The only things that aren't original from the car are the 'Body control module' (behind glovebox) and the dials/clocks. His computer is saying the chassis number from the donor car we removed the clocks from, my question is, can these be recoded?

Cluster won't stop it starting iirc. Have you replaced the EWS module? Blue plug, behind glovebox, again iirc...
The EWS is the link between the key chip receiver and the dme. Without the correct chip/EWS handshake, it won't go.

I think the EWS module behind the glovebox was changed with one from a salvaged car but the one under the steering column has been replaced with a new one from the dealers ordered off the chassis number.

It's cranking over but won't start yet.

I'll pass this on to my man, thanks.

Chip in key is linked to EWS. if its a salvage unit you'll need the key that goes with it.

Can the salvaged unit be recoded or do I bite the bullet and buy a new one from BMW?

Thanks again for your knowledge sharing.

Sadly not. Blank new unit can be burned to existing key, or secondhand unit with matching key. Coded units cannot be reprogrammed.

Just to clarify, DME, EWS and key must all match. If going secondhand you'll need all three. Best route here is new blank EWS. It'll still need coding though.

I have the original ECU for the engine under the bonnet, never been touched. Also, we bought a new EWS module for the immobiliser which is fitted under the steering column BUT the one mentioned before with the blue connector behind the glovebox is a salvaged one.

I would rather get a new one from BMW and code it to be honest.

To be honest, I'm over the moon it's even cranking and turning over on the starter motor, I'm a happy man. For now...

The unit under the steering column is the transmitter receiver module. Bit like an amplifier as I understand it.

Found this little bit of info, might help to understand it.
