Actually there's another way to do this without removing the airbox .... but much easier if the car's up on a hoist or you have long arms with the car up on jack stands

Or if you really wanted to, swap in the standard E46 M3 oil dipstick and tube (but some bending is required)

I had a go at this today, got stuck on how to get the airbox intake part out, so found the vid... so now I know I have to take the pollen filter housing out too. Which is useful, thanks a lot Mark...

I also found a present from BMW Cooper Reading sitting in the pollen filter tray ! Crap photo but it's a 27mm spanner, so pretty damn big !

Lucky it didn't get caught up in something,that would have thrown a spanner in the works.
