Default ITIL and/or PRINCE2 advice

Apologies as it's not CSL related but I think a few of you guys are contractors so I'm after some advice.

Looking at doing the ITIL and/or PRINCE2 courses and I wondered if they are worthwhile or do you just end up with a piece of paper that employers don't care about?

I'm currently a Sysadmin contractor (for years) but I run projects and I'll be looking for a new contract, possibly back in London, soon and I was hoping that if I formalised my project management stuff it would make it easier to get something?

It'll mean I'm back on the train if I go back to London so at least the CSL will get back to a more acceptable daily vs track use ratio :D

Cheers!

Phil

To keep it short as this sort of Subject can get me going....

I would recommend PRINCE, passing both exams. You can do a 5 Day crash course with exams taken at the end and that will give you the the PM "Tick box" with ITIL Foundation exam to cement the knowledge.

ITIL Exams go further on and can take a couple of years to complete and IMHO are not worth it. To show a Understanding of the process and workings of that Metho through Foundation is good enough. with a possibility of one or 2 Module / exams taken to really set you apart.

PRINCE is all the Buzz

I know there is load of Contract work out there for PM Consultants etc.

Hope the above helps.

Thanks Chris, I'll get cracking.

P2 Foundation and Practitioner and then ITIL Foundation I think.

Hi Phil,
I would recommend doing only if you are out of work, as they have a limited life and you need to renew them. If you are in work you dont need them, experience is the main thing in the contract industry working on similiar types of work with similiar types of companies.
Hope that helps

Hi Derek,

Good advice.

I'll be looking for a new contract shortly for the first time in a few years and wanted to formalise my knowledge.

I've managed many projects but it would be nice to have a proper methodology!

Cheers,

Phil

I agree with him absolutely. A short Course of ITIL/ Prince 2 with certification will help you a lot mate.
