As the engine is shut off in '1' I think it remains in gear anyway. I think that the last minute push across to 'N' just changes what is indicated rather than actually putting it into neutral. I am sure that if you do not go through this procedure the car takes slightly longer to start up.

Well at least most seem to shut her down in '1' or do you all do that with your manual cars - ?

So the question is why do most shut her down in gear ('1/R') as I am sure it is not written anywhere ?????

I always switch it off in reverse, a legacy of having owned a Saab 900

Doesn't it bong at you if you just turn the ignition off while it's in neutral ? I'm sure that's why I always leave it in gear.

Yes, you could be right. Maybe that is it then. Hence off in '1' and then after shutdown move selector to 'N' which does not actually change the gear but just sets it up for next restart.

Yes it bongs, i always leave mine in neutral with the handbrake off so i can roll it in the garage and wont get flats on the tyres.
