Depends on how much of the engine you are rebuilding. Parts availablity will still be an issue it would seem, so that obstacle would still be there. Seems mostly top end issues with the S54, and a few big end failures (probably caused by the top end issues).

Real shame these issues are cropping up on a truly iconic BMW.

are there any parts that specifically have to come from BMW ? Can aftermarket replace many items. I know with Porsche rebuilds ( aircooled) , most can be bought aftermarket , or parts from other cars modded to fit ( cyl heads etc )

Interested as these things start to become more of an issue as the cars get older. Surely a lot of the mech items on a CSL are shared with the standard M3 and those that arn't can be got aftermarket ? ( ref to the oily bits )

It's only people with warranty that are struggling. Those without always get them fixed ok

Did a full rebuild on a CSL last month with wiseco pistons and rods etc etc. Runs like OEM. Stock Compression.
