Default battle of the Somme...

Did anyone watch this tonight with c4's resident 'I have a cunning plan' archeologist?

I love all these programmes shedding more light on what really went on in the 2 world wars

That huge flame thrower must have been a truly terrible weapon to be on the wrong end of

Yep I watched it mate, absolutely loved it, have watched Time Team for years, the WW ones are superb though, heads and shoulders above some of them!

Have you seen the one they did in Ypres, Belguim when they dug the underground tunnel 'Vampire'? Absolutely incredible!!

Let me tell you a story in my old grandads words to give you an idea what it were like !

My grandad told me a story of the Somme, just before he was heading back there from England, my dad asked him " Dad, if you see one of those German helmets we a spike on it, bring it back for us will ya ?"
My grandad said " Ay lad, I will if i can"
So he set of for tut Somme. When fighting kicked off he went over the top and into them, and as battle raged all around, he fought on bravely through the very deep muck and bullets. During a lull in the firefight, granddad spotted one of those very helmets wee a spike on it lying in the mud and thought “ That will do our lad, he’ll be reet chuffed wee that fooker !” So granddad put his rifle down and bent to pick it up, but surprisingly it didn’t move !! So wee both hands under the rim, he pulled harder ...and he were flabbergasted when the helmet said to him in a German accent “ Halt ! halt ! you vill pull mein fookin swede off!” Well granddad were just a little surprised at this turn of events, so clearing some mud away, he finds this German still inside the helmet ! The German says to granddad “ Vot zee fook are you doing ?” ..and granddad replied “ I’m wanting thars helmet ta teck ‘ome with us fer my little lad!” ...”Vell” said the German, you can have mein helmet just so long as you pull me out from ziz shite !” ...”Bloody ‘ell ..all reet “said Grandad, “hold on” ...and grabbing the German we both hands he pulled and pulled...but the bugger didn’t move ! ...”Fook me “ exclaimed grandpa ..”Yoose a big fat fooker aren’t ya ?” ...”Try under zee arms” said the German ... so with much more gusto and driven on by the desire to get the helmet for his lad, granddad took old of the fat fooker under the arms and gave a mighty heave which made the veins stick out on his neck ! the German never budged ! “Tickle ma fookin tits till Friday Fritz, I cant shift ya “ .... and the German said “ Vill it help if I take my feet out of zee stirrups?”
