Default Oil level display

My oil level reading was at +0.7 straight after oil change at the main dealers that I had done earlier in the year.

Last week reading dropped to +0.6

Added approx 250 ml . Expected oil reading to show higher, which it didn't. Still at +0.6

Bit of research later ( yes I know I should have read the manual earlier ) and realise the reading is the long term reading

So, did the instant reading using the sport button and it shows +1.1

Not worried about the high level as I only added a small amount. Question is, how long / how many miles does it take for the long term reading to catch up or match the instant reading ?

Half an hour of steady driving should do it.

I just came across a sheet where bmw gave the actual factors which omit a long term reading.
Unfortunately its in german, or i would've posted it, in case somebody doesn't have it yet.. anyway, it says:

  • RPM above 7000
  • High lateral or longitudinal acceleration (Doesn't state any values)
  • Oil Temp below 60°C
According to this sheet, once the engine is at operating temperature it should take approximately 15 min to give you a long term reading.

Hope that helps.

I wonder is someone could invent a little stick with a level marker or two on it . . . that would be progress . . . then, if you really want to knock the ball out of the park . . . put it in a place where the owner of the car can get at it !!!
