I'm glad that stacks up in your head because it's a poor justification. BMW like any other car manufacturer would have built many testing mules but the reality is that when it came to the crunch the CSL was SMG only. Forget what BMW
might have tucked away in a warehouse.
If you
must have a manual then a preferable approach from my stand point is that you buy a CSL and convert it to manual whilst keeping all the bits required to reinstate the SMG at a later date.
I've been a manual guy all my life, aside from my 535D, and for performance driving I'd have always insisted on shifting myself. But what people say is true, the SMG suits the CSL and make you a quicker driver, no doubt about it.
