That's actually incorrect ... EWS-3.3 (which is the one in the E46 is a separate module).

Both Prime mate and Cantfind1 is sort of right and wrong on this topic ... I don't really want to get into it on here as it'll open up a can of worms on how to steal our car
Suffice to say that the 'proper' way of doing things is you'll need to code the DME for the correct EWS and the EWS will need to be authorised for the correct keys, so when it goes through the starting procedure it works as intended (i.e. key, talks via the antenna, talkes to the EWS, verifies that the key is authorised, releases starter relay, sends ISN to DME (which checks the rolling code table to make sure it's the correct EWS) for starting procedure, then the engine comes alive
