E46 M3 track slag turned around in a day

So Adem and I picked a E46 M3 up bank holiday weekend in Scotland, BMW kindly lent me a new White M5 which made the journey shorter in time.

She has 54k miles on the clock and all OEM.

Sunday was our only day to fit intrax, AP's, change brake fluid, strip interior, fit seats, harnesses and geo before bedford on Monday.

The seats we ordered failed to get delivered on Friday so had to remove the seats out of the E36, drill new holes in the base and fit.

First removed interior:

http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2f353d5f.jpg

Then had to fit door cards
http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/...psa037c761.jpg

http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/...psf6dcc6ab.jpg

Had to fit E36 seats :(
http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/...pscade4b52.jpg

http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/...ps822385f1.jpg

Didn't have time to fit short shifter.

Fitted AP's and Intrax
http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/...psc05e68b8.jpg

Ran out of time to fit new bonnet:
http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/...psb0594511.jpg

Bought some cups off here but rear was flat as a pancake and doesnt hold air so had to make last minute changes on Friday as wanted to arrive and drive on cups and didnt want to use my CSL rims with new cups for a shakedown at bedford.

Luckily been refurbing these 18's for the last week:
Before:

http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/...psc4222bf2.jpg

After some strong acid, shit loads of sanding, and cleaned with fairy liquid:
http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/...psf0631c40.jpg

These were supposed to go neon but didnt have the time so a quick trip to halfords and decided to be gay and go boring black:
http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/...psef00e5ea.jpg
http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/...ps74bad97f.jpg

All rims fit in the back of the car perfectly for when Adem, Gareth and I go to Zaaaaaaannnnddddvort next month.
http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/...psf3b00df8.jpg

Time was now 3pm and didnt have time for some porridge:
http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/...psffb04b8c.jpg

Adem took the car to his garage to Geo, but had be someone's body guard at a wedding incase things got out of control, so only managed to Geo the car at 5am monday morning.

The alternator packed up so took two batteries to track and Ctek charger.

Car at Bedford:
http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2d19bbe9.jpg

Still got loads to do but that was the best we could do in such a short space of time.

Car handles well, just need square set up on cups - and solid bushes all round.

Brandtner 17-06-2014 12:22 PM

nice work guys!!

glendog74 17-06-2014 01:15 PM

Nice work fellas

That's a superb turnaround :smokin:
Good effort.

Ace!

Great turnaround - timing just like most race teams!

LeinsCSL 17-06-2014 07:49 PM

That's some going, well done lads. Enjoy

adem.csl 17-06-2014 08:49 PM

I am battered the mrs now hates me!!
Ive had to relearn all the driving skill from the 328 and completely change my style to accommodate the extra 120 odd hp more in m3!
Shame she don't handle like the vert but as billy said once we bush n stiffen it she will go well!!

billyboysm3 30-06-2014 09:16 AM

So managed to free up some time early Sunday morning to do some more bits.

The main thing was to put the car on our scales and see what the weight distribution was like after removing the interior.

We put her on the scales:
http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/...psac5d6ba6.jpg
http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/...ps91b1c592.jpg

and she was 1400kg with 3/4 of a tank with not to bad weight distribution. I thought it would be worse.

http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/...pse18d1e65.jpg

We then started to remove the front end to put in a electric fan and switch, remove aircon and fit new alternator

http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/...ps513b3b63.jpg

http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/...pse42ef3d1.jpg

http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/...psb125c61f.jpg

This is what was removed - bar the washer bottle
http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/...psc507a606.jpg

Then when put back together:

http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/...ps96d2ab89.jpg

We then put the car back on the scales and it was 1380kg.

Car has OEM exhaust and still loads of work to do and bits to fit.

Jamie managed to refit a cup on my csl rims and a slick tyre that I managed to blister badly last time at bedford.

Going for a run out at Bedford on the 7th to see how she handles on CUPS before we fit reinforcement plates and new solid bushes.

shane@mbtech 30-06-2014 09:36 AM

Our exhaust is 23kg lighter than stock system Billy. 98db @ 6000rpm.

Get it fitted.

I'm just fitting another this morning then off for mapping

Nice one boys

I have some nice lighweight BBS E88 18" rims for sale if you want to save a couple more kilos

derek 30-06-2014 12:34 PM

Well done Billy it's only taken me 3 month, booked first track day on 10th July

adem.csl 30-06-2014 09:03 PM

Billy done a great job pulling it all apart and together he got a great base in that m3 hopefully with the fibreglass bits it will shed more weight!!

Best of luck at Bedford on 7th dude

Gotta find more weight to loose dude though

Graham 05-07-2014 10:01 PM

Good work, are you doing anything oil & radiator wise for better cooling?

billyboysm3 06-07-2014 09:39 AM

All depends on how Bedford goes tomorrow and how Adems tricked up oil cooler and bits cope at zandvoort

Graham 06-07-2014 12:12 PM

Look forwards to seeing the results

billyboysm3 06-07-2014 07:04 PM

Thought Id even it out and fit a spare set of my csl rims with cups, 19 inch staggered set up for bedford tomorrow to see how the car handles compared to the CSL

I always liked it.

So took car for its 2nd track day ever, after electric fan and switch, oil and water temps were perfect all day, was short shifting at 6k revs as want to ease the old girl into it.

Ran with sport off by mistake, does it actually make any difference?

Also told the misses we were going out for the day, she was well chuffed we ended up at Bedford :)

Wanted to run my 19 inch csl rims to see how much different the two cars are, my cups were f*cked to begin with and they didn't like the heat on Monday.

Track felt slower than a few weeks ago, heres a video of the old girl using my bullet cam, was doing 2.46/2.47 all day but couldn't hook up a virtual best of 2.44

Enjoy:

Oh, best set up is defo 18 inch square set up on cups, should never of sold them to Lawsy

I agree about the 18" square set up  I should have never SOLD them to you in the first place ;) :bigcry:

shimmy 08-07-2014 07:47 PM

Billy

I'd be interested now to see if your M3 time is better than CSL time at Snett. The cars must now be about same power/weight, same suspension, cups.

Not yet it isn't, it just doesn't handle the same, steering rack maybe, stiffer bushes and square set up, as per the video I was wrestling with the steering but was on 19inch rims, the Csl is complete out of the box, then intrax and bbk finishes it off.

This thing is stripped and doesn't have it, it's good but not like letting a Csl loose on track.

Going to run square set up next and see, I think I could do 2.12 at snett really going for it but miles off that big 2.10!!!!

Fucking mega times shimmy at Bedford and snetterton, really good bench mark and anyone that can get near them is a very good driver.

Going to make sure I get tuition from mike wilds at Bedford and snett

shimmy 08-07-2014 09:09 PM

Cheers Billy....all it was esp at Snett was crossing the line between driving hard under control and then getting the car out of shape and driving harder

It's not about treating it harder it's just having the car loose under you. I can't do it out of the box but it does come back to me when in the groove,

I think he square set up isnt any quicker (maybe a tiny bit on the brakes) but it suits us novice drivers as it stops the understeer for us, whereas a pro driver or some one who has mastered the technique can get the car turned without overheating the fronts.ONeill can drive the OeM sizes quick.

billyboysm3 08-07-2014 09:30 PM

The m3s heavy up front, with some more weight removed im sure turn in will be improved as the 328 turns in better.

Not done snett for well over a year in a m3 so will get one booked in the next couple of months. Would be good to go back to see how I have improved.

I'll let you and Barry know some dates. Ill see if I can get funkster out also.

Looking good mate

shimmy 09-07-2014 07:37 PM

Got mine back today after a few weeks at Elms for some free storage and a loan of a X1, 430, M5 and 525MSport.

A little bit of warranty work done thata Gareth found before he left and Emma and Dan kindly sorted in the usual kind, efficient and thoughtful way. Many thanks to them.

So CSL goes back in the garage and I'll have to drive my own car to work now :(

I uploaded my Vbox data from 2 weekends ago at knockhill and compared with the CSL data from the other month. (my csl is std bar AP's)
The new car is 5mph slower up the main straight, 2mph slower on the back straight and slower by about 7mph down through Duffus.
Now a lot of this could be down to the fact I just need to learn how to drive this car as never had a car with anything other than near factory settings however I did think that with the spec of the car it would easily match the CSL times.
Saying that I've just discovered a Vanos issue so that might explain the lack of power.

All in all the CSL is superb out the box and a std M3 needs to work really hard to get anywhere close.

I agree Paul, would like to test the M3 out at Donny, Bedford or snetterton against a well driven CSL though. We have a few upgrades for the next day, two completely different cars out of the box. Shows you how good the Csl is.

Just done 2nd track night in m3 first was a diaster due to wheels rubbing inner arches. Best time was 1.9 secs down on csl, m3 is 8 mph down on my best time on main straight in csl, 112 was max speed last night. Car is going well but water temp was a bit high but would drop down quickly after cool down lap

Remove Aircon and front pusher fan, install electric fan and switch and no water temp issues unless your stuck on the M25

Derek this is what it looks like on your front end

Need to remove the aux fan and get some air into the rad. I got a mishimoto fan for £65 to install behind and remove viscous fan
