Fibre optic broadband install nightmare
 

We've finally got fibre optic available in our area, and i duly signed up with talk talk. I was told by the customer services bloke that an engineer will come and install it in 2 weeks time. :-D. What they failed to tell me and what ive prob not bothered to read in the t&c's was what was involved in the install. Now in theory, its pretty straight forward cos ive done a googly search and found out that they upgrade the bt master socket and connect up your router. Your router has to be connected to the master socket (not any other extension socket) or via data cable extension.

:moan: Now upon reading the google search results i realised that the friggin master socket (from which i have about 8 extension sockets around the house ) is located in the utility room just above the skirting board behind a kitchen unit (recently fitted by my klutz of a carpenter, who also covered the hot and cold valves of the washing machine!! ) :banghead: so basically inaccessible.

My question is to all you clever clogs out there, can you convert an extension socket so thats it becomes a master socket.

If they can't get at the master socket, I think you're stuffed, they'll have to fit a new one somewhere and route the external phone wiring to it.

Is this not Xdsl (Adsl) not Fibre as Fibre and Copper line Broadband is different tech

Fibre should be a separate feed into your Household as in a Fibre cable is run from the nearest junction to your house (Fibre is normally run along the street / Pavement from the local exchange with spread junctions units). Thus they should run the cable to a House junction box which they will install and from that they will run a 2nd fibre cable to where ever you want.

I have Virgin Fibre Broadband in which I have a small Box on the side of the house that supply's 2 cables one for the Cable TV and one for my Router which I asked them to run the cabling to the back of the house.

Yes, he's referring to Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC), which is DSL over copper from the street cab. to the premises.

ye FTTC :moan: ive chopped a hole in the back of the kitchen cabinet and i can see the damn master socket now, but he wont be able to undo screws mess around with cable and swap face plates cos its such a byatch to get to. i think i may have to run some internal cable myself via the loft and down some stud walls to where i want and then get him to connect it up internally and externally and im not looking forward to crawling with my face in fibreglass insulation and poking and prodding with those push pull rods.

Spoke to a bt engineer mate today, he said, chances are the guy who comes will be a sub contractor from John Quinn, who work for openreach, they get £30 per job and are on a mission to bang em out. Cos they usually have about 5 other jobs to do in a day. If he cant be arsed then, he wont do anything extra. If thats the case then you just put your foot down and say well you better re schedule the job. That job then goes back to Openreach and there guys get around 2hrs to do the job and you'll probably get stuff done neater and how you would actually want it .

If he can't get to the master just tell him to connect to any of the others. It's bollocks that, any point will work, they all have two wires, tx and rx, the only thing I would say is out of the 8 extensions you should only have 4 plates with capacitors on them, from memory.... The others can be slaves.

the incoming 2 wire goes onto pins 2 and 5 on the master socket.This cable can be extended to any point using a small junction box and some cable to become to become master socket. The first point the cable terminates(i.e. first socket ) should be a master socket. For running slave socket( no capacitor or diode) run cable from master pin 2, 3 and 5 to slave. Pin 3 will extend the ringing out to the slave socket. You should only have one master socket. Hope this helps.
