Ohlins Road & Track kit for the M3 E46

5 Attachment(s)
This is the long awaited kit for the M3 E46.
Part of the 'Road & Track' series of Ohlins car products, the kit is designed to be comfortable for road use yet capable for track use.

It features Ohlins dual flow valve technology (aka DFV).
It's 1-way adjustable and has 70N/mm front springs and 110N/mm rear springs.
Last but not least it has TUV certification and a 2 year warranty.

Some pics.

I think that would be a well made bit of kit being Ohlins and knowing how good their stuff is on the bike side, looks lovely!

Pricing seems fairly competitive, though I don't think there has been many real world reviews of the kit yet over here.

It's been available in the states for over 6 months though.

I'd love to try a set just to see what they are like!

Ohlins had told me that when testing in one track with a 997 GT2 RS compared the OEM suspension vs. KW V3 vs. Ohlins road&track.
The laptime is ~60 secs.
The KW V3 was down 0.5secs compared to the OEM suspension.
The Ohlins road&track was down 1.5secs compared to the OEM suspension.

The result was repeatable with various drivers (each driver improved in the same way his laptime), although their pace was different (one of them was a racing driver).

They also reckoned that a TTX setup would drop the laptime at least 3 secs compared to OEM, which is the setup that I will get

You clearly have too much money :smokin:

Alex, if your speaking to them again why not mention the Euro-Trip, it might be an opportunity for them to get a bit of good PR, with the launch of their 'Road & Track Kit'? Just a thought in passing:thumbs:

alexk 27-02-2013 11:04 AM

I have spoken to my guy about the CSL meeting...

Any ideas about what they could do/offer so as I can propose it ?
Maybe pm shimmy and me ?

Now if only those Porsche engineers had the skills, knowledge and experience to tune in those lap times from the start. They must be really jealous as it turns out the aftermarket suspensions actually use magic..

i think oem designers have more criteria to worry about than just laptimes

_Nathan_ 27-02-2013 02:50 PM

I think that is his point, as an oem suspension engineer ;)

Sure TTX is great but I don't have 5 figures to spend on suspension, and you will get a bigger improvement spending the money elsewhere.

I am not sure how to interpret your post.
Last time I checked, track focused suspension kits help reducing laptimes compared to OEM.

A lot of Porsche race cars run Ohlins suspension and not OEM.
All the current BMW Motorsport cars (M3 GT4, M3 GT2, M3 DTM and Z4 GT3) run Ohlins suspension...

s.mac 27-02-2013 05:08 PM

I'll see what I can get it for and let you all know.

ahtim 27-02-2013 05:31 PM

is this a one way adjustable? how much is it?

Not talking about race cars.

Take a car, a very fast sports already very capable on track car. Same engine, same tyres, same aero, same gearbox. Just change spring and dampers and find 1.5 seconds? How exactly?

s.mac 27-02-2013 06:05 PM

It's classed as 2 way (I think) bump and rebound

Demon Tweeks £2,392.58
I can a few hundred off this but would need to check if that was open to others

The Gorilla 27-02-2013 06:59 PM

Hi,

Not sure I understand your point.

Reason being that if you altered the
Valving and Springs rates on say the
std CSL set up, then on Track it would
be a little quicker, BUT, its road
manners would be sacrificed a bit further.

The ''compromise'' balance that was dialled into
the Suspension between Road and Track [Ring] use
would as a consequence, be more biased towards
Track use.

Not saying in this instance it would be a 1.5 secs
per lap Gain, but if you alter the dynamics of
the Suspension in say favor of the Track then
you will do so at the expense of the road, and if
done correctly, go a little faster on Track.

Bit like a F40, run one on the Track out the box,
and then go drive same Car but with Michelotto
suspension, you would swear that it was not the
same Car.

Regards,

The Gorilla.

Think the kit is 1 way Steve, bump/rebound combined?

I can get prices too as I have a contact who is a Onlins supplier, he gave me some decent prices a month or two ago as matey from m3cookies wanted help with his epic fail group buy

Not true - was with a latest spec Z4 GT3 yesterday and no Ohlins in sight...

PS. M3 GT2 isn't current car anymore either, Z4 GTE replaced it, and looks lovely!

s.mac 03-03-2013 06:38 PM

Let me know if you get pricing Toby, i may give this kit a try

alexk 03-03-2013 09:20 PM

Guys, I have my contact in the Ohlins test center in Nurburgring.
I am going to get a TTX suspension hopefully in April.

Another 2 guys want to get the R&T kit for their Minis.
Would anyone else be interested in the R&T kit ?
Maybe I could sort a massive discount for all of us ?

_Nathan_ 03-03-2013 09:25 PM

TTX will be awesome, is good stuff :D

alexk 03-03-2013 09:43 PM

I will open another thread

Me likes Öhlins TTX

leaded 06-03-2013 06:35 PM

I have been dealing with a UK Ohlins supplier for a while as I have been waiting for this kit.

They can offer the following:

Latest retail pricing is £2193.20+vat

For a bulk buy 5-9 sets This will be £1864.22+vat (15% discount). These can be shipped direct for £20+vat

Bulk buy 10+ sets - £1754.56p+vat. Shipping direct £20+vat.

I'm happy to arrange a group buy if there is enough interest. All from a UK supplier so any problems or warranty claims can go direct to them.

s.mac 06-03-2013 07:00 PM

seems a bit high in price leaded, I can buy single sets just a bit higher than your cheapest group buy price?

leaded 06-03-2013 08:01 PM

Is that from Demon Tweeks?

Indeed they quoted me a trade rate of £1860.99+vat and a retail of £1993.00 + vat but these are on the old pricing structure and i'm unsure if they would actually be able to deliver and honour this price. Group buys can be troublesome enough as it is. See how you get on and let me know.

These are the guys I have dealt with before - http://www.aurok.com/ They do everything in house including re-valving and custom setups so have good knowledge and support if things go wrong.

If we get good interest and people signed up then maybe they will be able to do better.

I've been waiting 3 months for this kit so i'm keen to get something moving as a group or individually.

At £10000 you will need to love them!

s.mac 06-03-2013 09:19 PM

Yes its Demon Tweeks
I have a good contact and yes he would honour it. They would need to ship them in.
I wouldn't want to put them through the grief of a group buy:(
It was more the heads up that your supplier could do better with pricing:)

And since I found out they were one way I'm sticking with the AST. I thought the price was too good to be true for an Ohlins coilover kit

I think that pricing is a bit steep, just for reference I've got a contact who supplies Ohlins kits in the UK and the prices I can get are:

1 kit: £2392.58
3-5: £2153.33
5+: £2033.70

Delivery is £22 and prices all include VAT.

2-3 week lead time on orders.

Brandtner 07-03-2013 02:23 PM

Sorry to go a bit off topic but has anyone had experience with the relatively new Bilstein Clubsport kit?

ahtim 14-03-2013 05:21 PM

Guys, any update on the group purchase?

Brandtner 16-05-2013 08:54 AM

Hi Guys,

Has anybody ordered these for their CSL? How are they finding them?

Brandtner 16-07-2013 07:51 AM

Anyone???

His Ohlins are nothing like the "cheap" ones mentioned in this thread.....

alexk 02-01-2014 07:31 AM

Did anyone install the R&T kit in the end ?

leaded 16-02-2014 10:24 AM

I'm in the process of fitting the R/T kit now. Spring rates seem a bit low compared to other kits at 70nm front 110nm rear (separate spring/shock). Does anyone know how to compare the rear spring rate to one on a full coilover ie intrax @ 50 or 60nm rear?

Rates ratio front to rear seem to be vanilla m3, usually firmer at rear.

Being Ohlins the damping should be good.

Due to the position of the spring (closer to the rotation point?)???
