BMW 1m

The smallest of the M cars has received an absolutely fantastic review in this months evo and went on to lap the Bedford Autodrome's West Circuit a hefty 1.9 seconds faster than our beloved CSL.

Great to see another fantastic M car but must admit that the trouncing the CSL's lap has taken, albeit on a different day probably by a different driver, was slightly less welcome.

Anybody here had a go or going to have a go in or at one?

..and without Cup's I think?

Troucing........ the CSL is 8 years old so its only a matter of time that this should happen though a surprise it has taken so long!!! not living in the uk, what does the E92 lap the EVO track in?

Oh, drop the defensive stance. 2 seconds is quite a difference.
Obviously cars evolve but this is an entry level M car showing a pretty clean pair of heels to the ultimate E46 M3 on special rubber.

The E92 manages the exact same time as the 1M but with a slightly higher peak speed.

M1

i saw one on saturday morning whilst out in mine. Very suprised @ the 2 second deficit, although it was inevitable that BMW would eclipse the csl eventually. That said the M1 is a bit tinpot, a little like the boxster/911 debate. CSL might be slower but it killls it for presence.

Tried to gode him into having a bit of fun but he was worried about the stonechips...!!

AlexGTT 23-05-2011 05:33 PM

Evo lap in the CSL was not on OEM Cups.

1M does sound like a cracking drive though. I'm testing one asap to see what all the fuss is about. Might drop the E90 M3 for one if it's that good.......................................but I doubt it. Looks tight for the kids in the back.:bigcry:

I was thinking of doing similar by trading my CSL for a new model Toyota Yaris when it comes out later this year :smokin:

Well,

It's faster than the CSL @ Bedford but much slower at the Ring.
Interesting...

It could be one of these 'special' cars for the press and taking into account that it's turbo, it shouldn't be too difficult to make it 400+ hp
;)

we will see them on track with our own eyes and we will see how good it is:birdman:

outnumbered 23-05-2011 08:04 PM

I'm sure the 1M is pretty fast, and special in its own way.

The EVO Bedford laptime in the CSL has always looked a bit slow to me - surely it shouldn't be 2s slower than an E90 M3 Saloon, under equal conditions ? CSL has better BHP/ton for a start, and the chassis isn't that bad either...

I think they look great (that's not meant to sound sarcastic), but I couldn't give a fook even if it broke Bellof's record, I still wouldn't be swapping the CSL for one

The 335i engine is wank compared to the S54, anyone driven a 1M to see how much M magic has been sprinkled on the engine?

Meant to be getting a test drive tomorrow; will report back if it happens!

Indeed. Problem is it's not an "M" engine, just a mildly tuned 335i motor. My 335i was lovely but engine was bland and pretty boring once you got over the usual turbo torque thing. Within 6 months I had it mapped and that kept my interest for a few months. Then got bored again!

Hee hee - you said "wank"

approved 24-05-2011 09:51 AM

of course its an m engine. its a new m engine, and its called progress.

its an entry level M, fast, economical, practical etc etc.

its no CSL, but its certainly an evolution of the brand.

given the cost of petrol, i think its a bold move.

i know its only a rendering, and i know you've seen it before, but if they built it, and called it a CSL, What would your thoughts be then?

its an awesome bit of kit at the end of the day.

shame a tuner and a graphic designer got to it first...

I know why M are turning to turbos but it doesn't mean I have to think it is a great idea, the throttle response on a turbo engine just isn't there like it is on the great NA M engines. Don't get me wrong turbo engines are OK in appliances, we have 2 petrol turbos in our house at the moment (335i and ed30) but for me M engines are about throttle response, high rpms and great noise and I've not yet driven a turbo engine that gets close. I suspect in the future that the s65 will be seen as the peak of M engines.

I totally agree. I drove the current GT-R last week and whilst it's a staggeringly fast and capable bit of kit, in terms of throttle response it couldn't hold a candle to the Renault Clio Cup I used to own.
As you say, we all know why they are doing it but that doesn't mean we have to like it.

shimmy 24-05-2011 12:55 PM

I like it

I've changed my mind;)
