BBS e88

I fitted my BBS E88 track wheels today to see if there were any issues with widths or arch/suspension clearances, etc.

I decided last year that i would change from wheel bolts to wheel studs/nuts for convenience so i fitted these first. It was a straight forward job and involved cleaning the hub threads prior to applying a drop of Loctite 262 high strength threadlocker and torque tightening the studs to 16 ft lbs.

The 10.5 x 18J rears went on without spacers and fitted nicely with a little clearance from the wheel arch and without any issues with suspension.

The 9.5 x 18J fronts had to have 12mm spacers fitted to fit ok and even so the inner edge of the rim is at most 5mm away from my KW Clubsport spring/strut upright... The top outer edge of the tyre looks like it would come into contact with the arch but this is partly down to only having around -2.2 degrees camber set on the fronts vice the -3.2 that i use on track.

I took it for a gentle test drive and am relieved to report that all seemed well although i was careful to not make the suspension compress at any point! I'm not overly keen on the wider front 18's 'blocky' appearance either but the drive felt so different to standard wheels and was almost go-kart like despite the Cups scrabbling for grip in the cold temperatures.

It will be interesting to see what this set-up is like on track! Looking forward to Donny on the 18th

_Nathan_ 05-03-2011 09:31 PM

Love them, prefer the gold centres though.

10mm spacer on the front would give you a little more room on the outside?

baldydaz 05-03-2011 10:59 PM

i'm doing donington on the 18th too. i'll try not to get in your way

ando 05-03-2011 11:19 PM

What offset do they work out to be? I say they will rub at the point where the wing meets the bumper.

I was thinking that - i need to dial in the extra camber on the fronts to.

I noticed a big difference on road yesterday on a short test drive!

Your rear tyres were cold and hard yesterday - spinning away merrily :hahaha:

karbonkid 06-03-2011 05:06 PM

Yes mate - i wanted to keep the staggered setup and experience the extra grip that the 285's offer ;)

Mark CSL 06-03-2011 05:35 PM

Looking good Rob the car is on its hole :hahaha:

s.mac 06-03-2011 06:30 PM

nice Rob :smokin:

car still looking clean :)

Ive got to say, Shimmy's 18"s looked good today :smokin: car set up looked bang on.

AlexGTT 06-03-2011 06:36 PM

Looking sweet mate. You have plenty of front strut clearance so 10mm front spacers would be ideal.

Looking forward to Donny. I'll be running rear CSL's all round to get rid of my stack of 265 Cups. Wheel studs also for quick change and ease of spacer fitment solutions.

double_r 06-03-2011 09:37 PM

The 18's look great on the car.

I had them in 19's on my non CSL M3. A pic for reference:

+1

Although I think you are only part slag at the minute...

for the total track slag look you'd need gold centres and the +10bhp shimmy stickers :smokin:

M3RS 08-03-2011 08:40 AM

Very nice!

I would kill for these wheels. Where you get them from? Sadly they are very expensive.

7.77 08-03-2011 02:56 PM

definitely the best wheels to buy even fitted on my friend's grannie:thumbs:

Awesome track inspired wheels, let us know how they roll:-)

alexk 08-03-2011 08:36 PM

Best wheel for a BMW, especially a CSL.

Well done Rob, it was a good choice

Did you weight them by the way ?

Negative - gold looks naff on a SG car.

The only colour they may end up becoming is a gunmetal...

Awesome. Awesome. Awesome.

Leave them silver. How did you get hold of them, they are motorsport only, right? Did you get them S/H or are they new? Ive investigated getting magnesium LMs before direct from BBS and they wanted a minimum order, like 5 sets or something...

I bought them secondhand from a guy in Italy - they are in good condition though and are 4 years old. I like the E88s as the bolt heads are hidden making the outer face look neater as opposed to the LMs. They are also lighter than the LMs.
