Engine light just came on
 

Driving at about 40 mph on a digi speed camera ridden A428, the engine shaped yellow light (not the EML light) just came on out of the blue :smt017. In the handbook it says "Exhaust emission values have deteriorated. Please arrange for the problem to be examined by BMW Service." Could this be yet another Lambda Probe ? :banghead: The car already had one of these under warranty @ 39 000 in 2006. Is this a common fault ? :whistle:

It will be because you have 100 cell cats on your car. Common occurence - no problems.

So what do I need do next then ? :smt017

Right ... so I should just get use to this light coming on from time to time. I'll check it again in the morning and see if it clears itself overnight. I presume the ECU will keep this fault in it's memory. Is it worth having a diagnostic plugged in to clear any stored faults ?

Mine has only come on once in the 15 months i've had 100 cell cats on.

The light came on and i shit myself :hahaha: but in the morning the light had gone off.

Yep... I too had a bit of a brown moment myself :smt053 yesterday, then I thought (worst case scenario) at least I have a BMW Warranty (though I didn't want the hassle). Unfortunately I started her this morning and the light is still staying on :smt017. Any further thoughts ??? :whistle:

are you using decent petrol. When I had 100 cell cats it came on if I ever put lower grade petrol in. I'm running decats now and Its on 90% of the time, regardless what I put in, I've just got used to the light staying on :)

Well, I put £50 worth of Tesco's 99 Super Unleaded in yesterday morning (didn't have much choice at the time) which seems highly recommended by many (though I prefer Shell's V-Power 98 :tonqe:) and it was OK for most of the day, until I was driving back home at very slow speed through road works, doing amazing MPG and suddenly the light just came On. It's still on this morning :bigcry:

High emissions ? Surely the light would have been on from the time of fill up ? and is this why the light is still On ? When I filled her up time before yesterday with my choice fuel ( Shell V-Power 98 ) nothing like this happened. What to do next ? Should I go for an Italian tune up ? :whistle:

I'm not sure the MOT guy is going to buy this at emissions check time :banghead:

It's what comes out the back end that matters for the MOT - not some random light triggered by an over-sensitive car. I'm pretty sure 100 cell equipped cars pass MOTs ok... Stop worrying...

Get the fault code read, it may be fook all, but it may have nothing to do with your lamda and be something more sinister. Also be careful which dealer you go to as they may charge you due to the exhaust mod, my ex dealer prob would try;)

My normal m3 engine light came on with 100 cell cats but the csl has been ok up to now. Although I have only ever put v power in, but I doubt the tesco stuff will be the cause.

Yeah... the car seem just fine. Still goes like the clappers. Same soundtrack but I've noticed the driver side pair of tail pipes are considerably more foul/sooty then the passenger pair. I wonder if this is an indicator of anything to do with my engine light on ? which it still is.

Just a quick update with regards to my engine (emissions) light coming on over the weekend, after Tesco 99 fill up. The ECU has been interrogated and the only fault (if you can call it that) was the great discovery that I had non standard cats :hahaha:. Both Andy @ Murketts BMW as well as my reputable Indy I've used for many years,collectively pointed at the poor quality of fuel used. Despite the Tesco 99 octane fuel being high octane it isn't always consistent. Remember Tesco being on the News some time ago with people in regular, non high performance cars conking out with failed Cats / Lambda sensors. The fault has been cleared, I added 30 litres of my choice fuel (Shell V-Power 98) to the CSL and all seems well again, after a further spirited 60 miles the light is still out :thumbs:. Never again, Tesco can keep their over hyped, irregular Peesh :whistle: THANX again to all who cared to share their thoughts

ive used Tesco 99 for 4 years with 100 cell cats and never had an emissions light come on

Yes, I hear U. I must have been unlucky but once bitten, twice shy. BTW big THANX for recommending Andy Pressland @ Murketts BMW, Huntington. What a nice bloke :thumbs: so helpful and generous. Didn't charge me a penny and even did a Complimentary Health Check, while I waited with a 100% positive outcome. As U said, I will not let any other Main Steeler touch my CSL either. :whistle:

There were two other CSLs there today so three including mine :drool: Their record is five CSLs in together on the same day :thumbs: and in total they look after about 50 CSLs. :supz: Impressive

ive been there when they had 5 in the car park and workshop and mine booked in for the following day (that must have been the day)

From memory it takes 30-50 miles for the ECU to reset itself (as long as it doesn't detect a fault).

Mine comes and goes on and off - and I swear blind that also air pollution/quality can cause it to go off too, there's a particular place not far away that tends to set mine off !!

And I think 95RON can do it too.

Are U on Murketts books, with your SG ? Not that my car needed it (since it's only been 2K since the big Inspection 2 at Park Lane) but I think the Complimentary Health Check from Murketts was a nice touch :thumbs:

Im not trying to fuel a fire, but without analysing your t99 there is no way of knowing this, they were making an educated guess because the fault in their computer was stored rather than current. So if your light returns, dont be surprised.

Well, my T99 has been washed out by Shell V-power 98 now so there's nothing to analise now. I hope the light stays off but I'll make some noise if it comes back on.

Interesting this as i had my emissions light come on yesterday for the first time in nearly 4 yrs of ownership (100 cells) i just put it down to a near 7 hr journey in the pouring rain knackering out a sensor from cornwall. But for the first time i had to change petrol from vpower to bp ultimate due to the local farmer running out i think bp ult is 97 about 200 miles later the light came on still surprised that a lower octane can do this anyway this thread was a nice little find :smokin:
