Who do you insure your CSL with?

Hi guys

Just bought a CSL yesterday, paid a little bit more than I should have, but now have a minter!

Next step is to insure. Any advise where to go? Ideally looking to add my 27 year old son on the insurance too, but if that's cost prohibitive ill leave him off.

Thanks

Welcome to the register Matt, myself and quite a few others on here insure our cars through Competition Car Insurance, which includes 5 trackdays per year and its with Aviva. If your not going to be doing any trackdays it probably not worth it to you.;)

CSLScot 19-05-2013 11:07 PM

Hi Matt, I don't do any track days & I'm with Admiral on a multi-car policy - cost came in pretty competitive with that & reduced a bit in the 2nd year.

classicline on a classic policy

s.mac 20-05-2013 08:13 AM

How does the classic policy work?
Mileage, no claims (do you lose what you have)

Mine will be getting parked up, again, after the trip so really don't need cci.
I would like the option to get out for the odd weekend.

deanobeano 20-05-2013 08:30 AM

Classicline here also.

It's my first time with a classic car policy. As I understand it:

You do not need NCD.
They will 'hold' your NCD and keep it live, ie it will not expire after 2 years of no usage. If you move to another policy that requires it, they will update the NCD (ie add the no of years you have been claim free with them) and give this to your new insurer.

Mileage is agreed as part of the terms - mine is 4000 miles pa.
European breakdown cover is included in mine.

The only question I have is in obtaining a valuation to be covered under the 'agreed value' option.

Matt21 20-05-2013 07:43 PM

Thanks folks. Plumped for classicline at £430.

Jonnymaz 20-05-2013 07:47 PM

Also Admiral on a multi car policy. From memory it was about £500 with 10 years no claims.

s.mac 20-05-2013 07:48 PM

thanks Dean, I will give them a try :)

all those with CCI don't forget to let them know you are going to Europe ;)

Classic line
30 yrs old
Parked on drive
12 yrs ncb
5000k miles
Agreed valuation
£600
£490 if in garage
Not bad.

JBird 02-07-2013 10:03 PM

Now with classicline on the modern classic policy (after being booted off CCI earlier this year with a days notice for being too young )

-Garaged in OX29
-5000 miles per year
-32 years old, 12 years ncd, but that never seemed to be taken to account
-Can't remember exactly, but i think i pay 650 ish p/a with a 250 excess. (so overpaying compared to prev post!)

BMW track days are included, and others can be added for 75.

I took up this policy as it seemed like the best alternative to CCI, and they cover european trips up to 90 days, and multiple trips are allowed each year, which was impt for me since the car will spend most of the year in the vaterland.

CraigMillwardCroft 03-07-2013 04:49 PM

Got a quote from Classic Line for £425, but CCI came in at £419 after calling them, so all sorted new policy starts 13th July and Track day cover for SPA 15/16th result.

CCI

Hi Craig,

Chaps,

After a rather abrupt/rude letter received a few weeks ago and subsequent investigation it appears CCI are dumping customers at the mo, last yr it was a 'commutting' policy issue this year its 'age':banghead:.
A phone call earlier today confirms this (for me) it seems they no longer want to insure the E46M3? A friend mentioned they had also recently dropped a large part of their Lotus business?

Its a shame their ''statistic machines'' dump enthusiasts with cars such as the CSL in with general muggles??

I have subsequently (today) gone with classicline insurance and got my quote down a third for better cover so all is good, i recommend their service, so far!

http://www.classiclineinsurance.co.uk/contact-us/

Good luck with your CCI renewal:banghead:

THANX for the update PP  Real shame CCI are pushing good business away in such an appalling manner. I'm with them at the moment, over 35 and don't use it for commuting so I've not experience any of the common CCI issues others are having, yet ;).
I've been with them for as long as I've had my Cecil (almost 4 years) and they've always been very good with me. My last years quote was very competitive @ just a shade over £300 so I grabbed it with both hands.
My renewal is at the end of October so I'll see what BS they come up with by then and let everyone know.

Matt,

They quoted me a 40+yr old requirement as cut-off this year?? :-(
Seems any excuse to dump e46M3, the chap i spoke to referenced to 'new statistics' that put the car in an unfavourable risk category? Guess the base car has become such a bargain performance tool that idiots have purchased and subsequently detroyed, incuring too many losses for Aviva to cope with??
Good Luck!

JBird 09-07-2013 03:30 PM

I was fairly furious with CCI, as they booted me with a days notice, and I was heading away for the weekend with the CSL when I found out.

I spent a long time on the phone with them, and in the end they said their underwriter had instructed them to get rid of all Lotus and M3 drivers under 35 as soon as their policy next runs out. There was no mention of the age 40, and no mention of commuting as a reasons.

I asked for 1 month extra cover to give me time to find another company and they wouldn't even do that. I just hope classicline don't go doing the same.

benfj180 09-07-2013 04:01 PM

just renewed with Zenith!

I had a renewal through from Admiral..........£1100 for CSL 8k miles, fully comp, me age 31, 9 NCB........

Did a comparison on confused, got it insured now with Zenith £580! result!

Having a small dilemma,

Tried Classicline but as the CSL will be only car until October, they aren't interested.

My current insurer will only give market value and I cant get GAP. I need to plug it with a "guaranteed value" policy for now.

Any ideas?

Straightsix 19-07-2013 04:23 PM

Hmmm my insurance is up for renewal and I am with AVIVA but am thinking of changing as rather expensive.

Jimbo 19-07-2013 05:43 PM

I'm moving from Aviva (even though its cheap cos I'm staff) to classic line probably at just shy of £400 to get a guaranteed value + they will give free track day cover for car club organised events apparently.

Tried flux but they didn't class the CSL as a classic :moan:, just peter best to try now to see what they can do.

I am a bit careful with some of these smaller insurance companies as they may not pay out in the unfortunate event of a claim. Where as maybe a big company like AVIVA may.

Are you an actuary :-) ?

Jimbo 19-07-2013 07:01 PM

Don't work near the motor business unfortunately!

I've never had to claim (touch wood) and never had to deal with a smaller insurer, but I'll bear it in mind.

My worry with a market value insurer is that should cesil meet her end, not only would I be distressed, the market value payout would be round the £15k mark per Parkers or equivalent valuation service.

Unless anyones had the unfortunate experience and I'm wrong about the larger insurers.

I have same concerns, looking for an insurer who will do guaranteed value.

PS I'll keep an eye for you, from my neck of the woods!

Insurance Mafia

Chaps,

I also had concerns with agreed value insurance (which i finally went with).

If its an agreed value i know the 15K 'Parkers market value principle' wont come into effect if i was ever unfortuante enough to have a claim.

....buuuut as CSL values appear to be in good health and rising, would i be able to replace my car at the agreed value @6monthes down the line if CSL replacement cost had risen in value significantly over that period?:banghead:

I guess its a chicken and egg scenario!:(

I'm curious as to who can establish an agreed value in a rising market.
There is approx a £5K gap in price comparison between NJ and Hexagon,
if you/they use a trade guide you'll be miles out.

However what may be an acceptable figure today, won't buy you a replacement CSL in 6/12 months time.:(

PS: A Classic Car policy is usually applicable to a car when it's 10 years or older, check your birthdays. :)

steveH 23-07-2013 12:17 AM

agreed value insurance

Its a minefield but there is hope!!

Most classic car policy providers will consider cars from 10 years (possibly 5 years) old for agreed values, usually associated with limited mileage
With regards the actual valuation the some reputable dealers / Indy's may offer this service but so does BMW Car Club too (01225 709 009)
It is difficult to judge from photos / owners description the value and more so when the model (ala CSL) is rising.
Most valuers will use web based sites like this to gauge the asking prices along with P/H's & traders etc.
Ultimately it is the owners who need to be honest in their descriptions, any failure may result in the value being void (if considered fraudulent value or mis representing the actual vehicle etc). Having the comfort of an agreed value is IMO worth doing each renewal.
Finally bear in mind insurers work on current Market Values so do your homework to provide evidence of values at the time.

Pip1968 23-07-2013 08:43 AM

An additional point to bear in mind is that valuation on write off is based on private selling prices and not trade.

Pip

s.mac 24-07-2013 08:18 PM

I went with classic line with an agreed valuation. I just need to get the valuation from BMW or a another.
£330 per year and they will hold your no claims. I explained all the cars I use for daily are in my fleet but I didn't want to lose my personnel no claims.

They were happy with a valuation from CSL register if it was on a letter head.... Mark ?? ;)

Straightsix 26-07-2013 12:22 PM

I had car insurance with AVIVA for the M3 CS.
Renewal premium was quite high.
Cancelled the old policy.
Taken out a new policy with a few extra items of cover as you never know.
I saved about £1000. Well happy with that. Also saved about £20 per month on BMW Insured Warranty (Comprehensive) :-)

Also I had to remember to cancel cover otherwise they may automatically renew and tell the advisor.
