I would get a standalone ecu and normal gearbox (5 speed e36 non evo probably) (or Drenth if money allowed) personally.
I still have smg but will get rid of it once I can afford a Drenth, will go to MoTeC (can do you a deal on MoTeC if you want as we are a dealer).
Smg is good but it is heavy, adds complexity, ties you to the oem ecu which may be a pain for you to retrofit to an e36 and is the only part of my car that I don't fully trust.

I will echo Nathans thoughts
If you have no other reason than being a lazy fooker, go manual;)

The getrag 5speed is a pretty good box, and it'll serve you nicely with s54 running gear.
Smg might be abit too much to fabricate in an e36 shell.

Have run CSL race car with smg for three years, no problems ever. Have a spare gearbox and never used it, just sat in the workshop.

It's not the gearbox that's the issue though, as it's the same gearbox as the manual.
It's the gubbons controlling shifting/clutch etc which CAN be problematic
But as John says, he ran smg with no issues.
BUT with smg there is more to go wrong,
Ultimately the amount of Csl I have been around, it is a reliable product

I haven't had any issues with mine other than a couple of crunchy downshifts which I suspect are caused by the 4.1fd and me changing down too early. I wouldn't enter a 24h race with it though, if only for the time it takes to bleed the clutch using a computer!
However, I personally think it is madness to add all that weight and complexity to an e36, oem ecu and therefore clocks plus a load of sensors, pump etc, just seems silly.
Nath, I think you actually have to USE your car to experience problems mate? ;):gayfight:
Hate to tell you, but the odd crunchy downshift was the start of the end for my gearbox, packed up completely at Brands shortly afterwards.
To the E36 guy.....dont do it, my car with a manual, quickshifter and 4:1 diff was totally transformed middle season. It wasnt till I dumped the SMG that I realized how shit it was!

Interesting really, the only SMG race cars I've heard of with no issues are all CSL's, all the M3's with SMG's seems to have issues resulting in people swapping them out. There's no technical reason I can see that makes that the case? Certainly agree that adding one to an E36 makes little sense, add a Drenth if you want it the best but race regs might not allow that?

okey it seams like SMG was not the way to go.
I was looking forward to minimize litle time between accelerate and deaccelerate,
by using the left fot for brake and right for trottle.
I run last sesson S503,2 6speed gearbox, 4,55 rearaxel
Drenth gearbox is nice but will give me wight by +75kg in my class
and that is not worth.
