On a different planet Mark, on a different planet. I didn't really want to be there for race 1, my mind was on other things. Anyway, not to worry, as a result of work related pressures (make hay while the sun shines) I won't be doing anymore CSL Cup races, with perhaps the exception of Brands.

Motors TV coverage of Race 1 here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FhAHEOOFwjI)

I'm reuploading race 2 to vimeo as its 13 minutes long, and youtube rejected it!

TBH Had a good start as usual then the lighter, faster cars (better drivers too) overhauled me and I spent all the race touring round on my own with my extra 100kg of self imposed ballast :bigcry::bigcry::bigcry:

Sure fire way to get numbers on grid up.....

standard class, with controlled brakes, suspension.

Standard engine/exhaust.

Standard weight etc.

Controlled cage. Controlled seats.

Only thing to change would be geo settings.

Not only will it increase numbers, make for better racing it will seperate the men from the boys and stop the open wallet guys stomping ahead.
More affordable to for the paupers out there.

Not taking anything away from the decent drivers on the grids, but a more even field will make it better for all parties involved.

Hazy and radders, if you need a driver anytime, Im ya huckleberry.

Would like to create the standard class again really, but without the cars interested there's not much we can do. Good luck to steve in his other racing.

We didn't control the cage but engine, suspension were all control. If we get the demand then we will reinstigate.

Suppose the problem with that Shane is that if you make it too accessible, wannabe-racers like me could get involved for £15k+ race license, and end up causing inexperienced carnage to the pricier metal

Not seen Dan for a while, but I see he's put a manual 'box in his car now – just curious but how many cars in the CSL Cup run SMG boxes?

I miss mine – when it worked...

3 smg cars, Mark, Adam and Nick. The rest are 5 or 6 speed manuals and steves drenth

Off topic but was chatting to a mate who is a designer at xtrac - their seemless shift sequential boxes are 0ms torque interuption on the way up the box and now do clutchless downshifts too! Slightly more money than a Drenth though!

The problem IMO with having a standard class is that most of the people who'd be interested have already set off down one route or another with their car and won't want to swap suspension or change rose joints back to rubber for example to fit a standard class so to make it happen in any great numbers you'd effectly end up with a "standard engine class" rather than getting parity on everything else? Maybe having similar tech rules but 2 power to weight classes would be a way round it?

correct, me and Mark are already a fair way away from what would be deemed "standard" I guess, plastic windows, lightweight panels, bespoke exhausts etc etc, HOWEVER our engines and Russ' are still standard, so for me anyway, a standard engined class would be a great option, save me and Mark perhaps £10k each close season (the call has already been made LOL)

Gotta say though, on out and out speed, Tango I doesnt fair too bad against the modified cars considering it weighed 1422kg at Oulton:bigcry: (I know, resolving this as we speak )

I know 100% that the standard way, with just cage, suspension and brakes was the way he envisaged the series going, but thats not been the case for some reason.

If any of you are thinking of going racing, I can recommend it throughly, its THE best thing I have ever done, the whole paddock craic is great too, and in paticular the way the Thorney CSL hospitality is set up for drivers/sponsors/hangers on is just great  The fact that me and Mark brought a second car that we cant really afford after just one race says it all really!

Thorney
16-06-2010, 04:57 PM
The series was set up for standard cars, glass, low cost suspension, no engine mods (save airbox), control wheels but the fact is that in the first year we only had 2 cars in that class, which eventually dropped to one. In the off season we asked for more but everyone who was building cars was building them to the higher spec so we dropped it. The regs allow for classes to be developed where 4 or more cars run, same applies for E36 and E92 classes, where there is less than 4 cars of one class they run in the invitation class. Next weekend we have 2 E92 cars and (we hope) 5 E36 cars, so that means the E36 class runs but the E92's stay in invitation competing against Kevins E46 and another E36 that has an E46 engine in.

The 4 car rule still applies though, if we can get 1 more standard class car the class can be genereated again, however the policing will be harder. Look at Steves car, we opened up the regs to allow non standard ECU's (a massive expense compared to standard ECU) but Steve is now leaving for other reasons, same applied to another car so the change was pretty much pointless now. Its a frustrating business running a race series, I cant help feeling that the moment we make a standard class the cars will all change:bigcry:
